1986-01-14 Bugs Bunny/Looney Tunes All-Star 50th Anniversary
Release date: 1986-01-14
Plot: This CBS TV special is a documentary celebrating fifty years of Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes, staging interviews with celebrities like Bill Murray and Steve Martin, who talk about the characters as if they were real Hollywood colleagues. Between these tongue-in-cheek testimonials, we see classic cartoon clips and genuine sit-down interviews with key creators such as Chuck Jones, Friz Freleng and Mel Blanc, speaking directly from their offices about how Bugs and the others were born.
Name and role: During one of the office interviews, Friz Freleng casually sketches a proto-Bugs on camera, building the rabbit's face and attitude right in front of the viewer; this on-screen drawing is effectively the special's one "new" Bugs performance, created live instead of pulled from an old print.
Trivia and other appearances: As a meta "Bugs about Bugs" project, it sits on the same shelf as later tributes like Happy Birthday, Bugs!: 50 Looney Years (1990)" or "blooper bunny" (1997)
