Bugs Bunny's Easter Special
Release date:
1977-04-07
Plot:
When the Easter Bunny calls in sick, Granny goes to the Warner Bros. studio to recruit Bugs Bunny as a replacement, only to find him too busy, so he walks her (and us) through a string of classic clips while would-be stand-ins and an over-eager Daffy Duck try, and fail, to take over the Easter gig.
Name and role:
Bugs plays himself as the consummate studio star: polite but smugly overbooked. He's half talent, half agent, calmly "casting" other characters for the Easter Bunny job.
Trivia and other appearances:
Within the special, Bugs meta-acts his own "career highlights" by replaying sequences from later-era shorts such as Knighty Knight Bugs (1958), Hillbilly Hare (1950), Bully for Bugs (1953) or Rabbit of Seville (1950)

Name and role:
Daffy is pure hungry showbiz energy here: he's desperate to be the new Easter Bunny, constantly interrupting the casting session in outfits that are either wildly off-tone or just plain embarrassing.
Only at the end of the special he win the role in a full costume that cover his persona.
Trivia and other appearances:
The special ends with Daffy disguising himself as the recovered Easter Bunny, only to be immediately unmasked by Granny and Bugs, a gag that foreshadows his later attempts to hijack holidays and TV time in shows like Daffy Duck's Easter Show (1980), where he finally gets his own Easter-themed starring vehicle.

1977-04-07

Name and role:
Here Granny finally steps out of the usual "little old lady with Tweety and Sylvester at home" setup and acts as a proper co-host, walking through the studio, negotiating with Bugs and dealing directly with characters like Pepe Le Pew, Foghorn Leghorn, Yosemite Sam and others. In most of her classic-era shorts she's framed almost entirely around Tweety/Sylvester conflicts, so this special is widely regarded as one of the very first times she joins the broader Looney ensemble on equal footing rather than just as "Tweety's owner"
Trivia and other appearances:
Granny's role here as roaming matriarch and problem-solver anticipates her later ensemble appearances in modern projects such as Space Jam and The Looney Tunes Show, cementing her as the human anchor of the franchise instead of just background support for Tweety..

Name and role:
This Easter Bunny is portrayed as a worried but essentially decent holiday worker, very different from the scheming, lazy rabbit who tricks Bugs into doing his job in Easter Yeggs ; design-wise and personality-wise, sources stress that he's effectively a new take on the character rather than the same guy.
Trivia and other appearances:
Because his earlier 1947 incarnation belongs to the pre-1948 library that Warner had sold off, this TV redesign is the first time many '70s viewers met an on-screen "Easter Bunny" in a Bugs context, even though Easter Yeggs technically did it decades earlier. Later Easter-themed projects like Daffy Duck's Easter Show (1980) and modern episodes such as Easter Tweets and Eggs-traordinary Adventure reuse the idea of an Easter Bunny disguises.

Witch Hazel and Bugs go on an adventure together for almost the entire film, an adventure overflowing with excessive use of the classic Jekyll & Hyde potion. Near the end of the special, Hazel actually transforms into a lovely Millicent-alike bunny version of herself.
Trivia and other appearances:
Hazel and Bugs have crossed broomsticks multiple times over the years, for example in "Bewitched Bunny" (1954), "Broom-Stick Bunny" (1956), and "A Witch's Tangled Hare" (1959) not to mention in video games like Bugs Bunny: Lost in Time.

Name and role:
Daffy's nephew, sadly nameless and doomed to obscurity, takes Bugs Bunny's place in the witch costume. It's just a recolor of the old scene, and possibly due to a goof, part of his face isn't recolored properly and stays white. His legs are orange, unlike Bugs's white ones.
Trivia and other appearances:
This was the first and only appearance of the mysterious young duckling, an unsung hero of the Looney Tunes lore, gone before he even had a proper name.
